Women 2.0 Startup Weekend Day 1: Greetings and Salutations!

By Christina Gunarto & Angie Chang (Co-Organizers, Women 2.0 Startup Weekend 2011)

Things got crazy at the Hatchery in San Francisco on Friday night at Women 2.0 Startup Weekend 2011. The soldout crowd of over 150 was a diverse mix of people by any count: gender (65% female), ethnicity, age (at least 3 youths), location (lots of East Bay folks)…

We started off with Women 2.0 and Startup Weekend representatives making introductions and housekeeping remarks.

Quickly things got exciting when the ice breaker began. Imagine an out-of-control game of rock, paper and scissors:

After the attendees were acquainted with each other, we had speakers to inspire the crowd. First, Sarah Allen (Leader of Blazing Cloud, CTO of Mightyverse and Co-Founder of Railsbridge — we all wear many hats here) made the audience laugh with her comment, “The only people who call their customers ‘users’ are software developers and drug dealers.”

Then Alexa Andrzejewski (Founder & CEO of Foodspotting) talked about her experience at a previous Women 2.0 Startup Weekend and gave the audience advice on how to make the best out of this weekend. She is a great case study of where one can go after graduating from Startup Weekend.

At the end of the night, there were 67 pitches made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More than half of the pitches were made by women. In fact, more than half of the room is women. This is Women 2.0 Startup Weekend and we are going to have the best Startup Weekend ever!
